About Mullett Twp.

Mullett Township (named after surveyor John Mullett) is a general law township located in Cheboygan County at the "Tip-of-the-Mitt" in Michigan's lower peninsula. Mullett Township was originally part of Burt Township, but on June 28, 1916 the local leaders voted to "set off" Mullet (notice it is spelled with only one "t"). Later on January 28, 1917 Cheboygan County officially certified the vote and the first township meeting was held April 2,1917 in Topinabee at the Spencer Hotel. (To view actual records of these events scroll to the bottom of this page.) Today the township has approximately 1300 residents. Because the area is one of Michigan's busiest resort areas that number greatly increases in the summer months. A unique geographical feature of the township is that it is roughly divided in two by Michigan's fourth largest inland lake, Mullett Lake. Travel from the east side of the township to the the west side requires leaving the township and traveling around Mullett Lake. Topinabee (an unincorporated village), in the west section, is the location of the Township Hall and the township's only commercial area. The township can be easily reached by exiting I-75 at Exit 310 to reach the east section and Exit 313 off I-75 to reach the west section.
